Photovoltaic energy is the energy that is derived from solar energy. The solar cells that are installed in the solar panels absorb the photon from the sunlight directly. They convert the photon energy into electricity by the photoelectric effect. The photoelectric energy is converted into solar energy using semiconductor materials such as silicon etc. the solar panels that are installed for harnessing the sunlight consists of solar cells. These solar cells consist of photovoltaic material and the materials used for generating photovoltaic energy include the polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, copper indium gallium, monocrystalline silicon, and sulfide. The photovoltaic energy that is generated from the semiconductor materials is renewable in nature.
In other words, photovoltaic energy is a kind of inexhaustible energy. The solar energy is converted into electricity by the reaction of the electrons. The electrons are released when the solar cells are joined to each other to form a chain and hence electricity is produced. The electricity that is produced is used for various applications such as lighting, electricity, heating and many other purposes. This energy can be created during the daytime and stored in a battery. A solar battery is used for storing the energy that is harnessed during the daytime.
Today people are utilizing the solar energy to a greater extent because it is inexhaustible in nature and the solar cells that are used for generating the electricity never get damaged and hence they need not be replaced for lifetime. But if you are using an ordinary cell, then it gets damaged due to the constant chemical reaction.

The word photo means ‘light’ and the word ‘voltaic’ means ‘electric effect’.
